Powerball jackpot reaches one billion dollars making it the sixth largest prize in the history of the game and sparking excitement across Florida

Tallahassee, Florida – The Florida Lottery is once again in the national spotlight as the Powerball® jackpot surges to an eye-popping $1 billion, ranking as the sixth largest prize in the history of the game. Players across the state are rushing to buy tickets ahead of the highly anticipated drawing, fueling both excitement and record-breaking sales.

Since Florida joined Powerball in 2009, the state has developed a reputation as one of the nation’s biggest winners, producing more jackpot prizes than any other participating state. With the latest prize soaring into the billion-dollar range, many Floridians are hopeful that lightning might strike again.

A Billion-Dollar Moment

The atmosphere surrounding this week’s drawing has been electric, with thousands of players lining up daily at convenience stores, supermarkets, and lottery retailers. Officials estimate that more than 7,000 Powerball tickets are being sold every single minute in Florida as anticipation builds.

“Every Powerball ticket purchased in Florida offers the chance to win big, but more importantly, it helps fund the educational dreams of students across our state,” said Florida Lottery Secretary John F. Davis. “Moments like these remind us of the incredible enthusiasm our players bring to the game and the meaningful impact their play has on Florida’s Bright Future Scholarship recipients.”

That blend of thrill and purpose has long been central to the Florida Lottery’s mission—turning entertainment into an engine for education.

Florida’s Winning History

Florida has had its share of remarkable Powerball moments over the years. The state’s last jackpot winner came in May 2024, when a player claimed $214.9 million. Florida was also part of the world-record $1.586 billion jackpot in January 2016, a historic event shared with winners in California and Tennessee.

Even during the current roll leading up to the billion-dollar prize, several Floridians have walked away with million-dollar second-tier wins. These steady payouts have added to the state’s long tradition of Powerball success.

More Than Just a Game

While the headline-grabbing jackpot captures national attention, state officials stress that the real impact of Powerball extends far beyond the drawing itself. Since the Florida Lottery was founded in 1988, it has contributed more than $49 billion to education statewide.

One of the most visible results of this funding is the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, which has already helped more than one million students pursue college degrees and other higher education opportunities.

Powerball alone has generated over $3.16 billion for education in Florida since its introduction, making it one of the most significant sources of funding for the state’s schools and students. If the billion-dollar jackpot is claimed in the next drawing, lottery officials estimate that approximately $42.70 million will go directly into the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund from this single event.

Excitement Across the State

The latest jackpot surge has sparked unprecedented levels of participation from players in every region of Florida, with Miami currently leading all districts in sales during this cycle. Store clerks report long lines stretching through aisles as residents from all walks of life take a chance at the historic prize.

The drawing has also fueled plenty of conversations in workplaces, classrooms, and neighborhoods, with many daydreaming about what they might do if they became the next billionaire winner.

A Reminder to Play Responsibly

Even amid the frenzy, officials are reminding players to keep perspective. “As excitement continues, the Florida Lottery encourages all players to play responsibly and remember that every ticket purchased contributes to Florida’s future,” the agency said in a statement.

Whether or not a Floridian holds the winning ticket this week, one certainty remains: the billions generated through Powerball and other lottery games will continue to provide lasting benefits for students and schools across the state.
