Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The City of Fort Lauderdale announced on October 13, 2025, that the precautionary advisory for water-related recreational activities in Lago Karen has been lifted, effective immediately. The advisory had been issued on October 10 following a sewer overflow along westbound E. Las Olas Boulevard, across from Bontona Avenue, which prompted city officials to restrict activities in the affected area.

The advisory encompassed Lago Karen within the boundaries of SE 1st Street to the north, E. Las Olas Boulevard to the south, S. Gordon Road to the west, and Hendricks Isle to the east. City authorities had previously urged residents and visitors to exercise caution when engaging in activities such as boating, swimming, or fishing while the situation was under evaluation.

After conducting thorough water sampling, the City confirmed that the waterway now meets the State’s surface water quality standards, clearing the way for residents and visitors to safely resume recreational activities. The City emphasized that these tests ensure the water quality is safe and that normal use of the waterway can continue without restrictions.

City officials also reminded the public that questions or concerns can be directed to the City of Fort Lauderdale Customer Service Center at 954-828-8000 or via email at [email protected]. Additionally, residents are encouraged to stay informed about emergency updates through Alert FTL, a free notification system that sends critical information via phone, text, and email. Registration is available at www.fortlauderdale.gov/alertftl.

This advisory removal ensures that activities like boating, kayaking, and fishing can resume, supporting both recreational enjoyment and local tourism. By keeping the public informed and adhering to state water quality standards, Fort Lauderdale continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its community while maintaining access to its waterways.
