Don’t let your Thanksgiving go afowl by following essential safety tips for cooking and frying turkey at home

Broward County, Florida – As Thanksgiving approaches, many households are preparing for festive meals, family gatherings, and the holiday tradition of serving turkey. Among the most popular choices is the deep-fried turkey, especially cherished in the southern United States for its crispy skin and rich flavor. However, while these turkeys are delicious, the tools used to cook them—particularly propane turkey fryers—pose serious risks if not handled correctly.

According to safety experts, propane turkey fryers, though readily available and relatively inexpensive, can be extremely unsafe when used at home. Both the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) caution that oil-containing turkey fryers should only be operated by properly trained professionals using professional-grade equipment. The NFPA goes further, discouraging the use of consumer-grade fryers altogether due to the high potential for burns, fires, and property damage.

For those unwilling to give up the tradition, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue is stepping in with demonstrations to teach safe cooking practices. During these demonstrations, firefighters wear full protective gear to show firsthand the consequences of improper use, including hot oil spillovers and potential fires. “Consumer-grade turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures and pose a significant danger,” officials said. “Additionally, the oil remains hot for hours after the unit is turned off. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries and the destruction of property.”

In addition to professional demonstrations, safety organizations recommend alternatives for those who want to enjoy deep-fried turkey without the risk. Oil-less outdoor units have been available for several years and offer a safer option, eliminating the hazards associated with large quantities of hot oil. The NFPA also suggests that consumers who prefer fried turkey consider purchasing it from grocery stores, food retailers, or restaurants that use professional-grade fryers, ensuring the meal is both safe and delicious.

Thanksgiving is historically the leading day for cooking-related fires in the United States. A recent report by the U.S. Fire Administration estimates that approximately 2,000 residential fires occur annually on Thanksgiving Day, with cooking identified as the primary cause. These fires most commonly happen between noon and 4 p.m., a reminder that safety precautions must be taken during the busiest cooking hours.

Beyond fryers, fire safety experts also stress the importance of smoke alarms, which remain a critical line of defense in protecting lives during cooking emergencies. Whether preparing a traditional roasted turkey, a baked ham, or a deep-fried turkey, having functioning smoke alarms in the kitchen and nearby rooms can provide crucial early warning, potentially preventing minor incidents from turning into catastrophic events.

Broward County residents, including those in Cooper City, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hillsboro Beach, Lauderdale Lakes, Pembroke Park, West Park, Weston, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Port Everglades, and unincorporated areas, are encouraged to heed these safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday. From using protective gear and safe equipment to considering professional alternatives, every precaution counts.

This Thanksgiving, the message is clear: tradition and safety can coexist, but it requires awareness and preparation. By taking recommended precautions, families can enjoy their holiday meals without incident. Whether frying at home, purchasing a professionally cooked turkey, or opting for an oil-less method, keeping safety at the forefront ensures that the holiday remains about family, gratitude, and celebration—not hospital visits and fire damage.
