Fort Lauderdale, Florida – St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has landed a major addition to its football program with the announcement that Class of 2028 quarterback Nate Merrell Jr. will be transferring to the 17-time state champion Raiders. The sophomore signal caller, who previously starred for the Immaculata-La Salle Royals, shared the news on social media Sunday, signaling what could be a significant boost for the Raiders’ offense in the coming seasons.

Merrell Jr., a 6-foot-4, 175-pound quarterback, enjoyed a standout 2025 season with Immaculata-La Salle, helping the Royals to a 12-1 record. Statistically, he was one of South Florida’s most efficient passers, completing 121 of 195 attempts, a 62 percent completion rate, for 1,779 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. His performance drew attention from college programs, including Florida International University and the University of Central Florida, giving him several options for his post-high school career.

The transfer comes at a key moment for St. Thomas Aquinas, as the team prepares to graduate last season’s starting quarterback, Mason Mallory. While the Raiders will also return Class of 2027 quarterback Cody Conness, Merrell Jr.’s addition strengthens the depth chart and offers the coaching staff added flexibility at the position. Head coach of the Raiders’ football program has not yet publicly commented on the transfer, but fans and analysts alike are already speculating on how Merrell Jr.’s skill set will fit into the high-powered Aquinas offense.

St. Thomas Aquinas finished last season as the state’s No. 2 ranked team, according to the final Florida 2025 High School Football Massey Rankings, and the program’s reputation as one of the nation’s top high school football teams remains firmly intact. Known for its 17 state championships, the Raiders have produced numerous collegiate and professional players, creating an environment that emphasizes excellence both on and off the field. With the addition of Merrell Jr., the program looks to maintain its elite status while grooming another potential star quarterback for future success.

Beyond athletics, St. Thomas Aquinas is recognized for its rigorous academics and strong focus on student development. The Catholic college preparatory school offers a wide array of Advanced Placement and honors courses, preparing students for higher education while fostering spiritual growth and leadership skills. The school’s emphasis on community service, personal development, and holistic education complements its athletic achievements, ensuring that student-athletes like Merrell Jr. can thrive both academically and on the football field.

For Merrell Jr., the move represents an opportunity to compete at one of the most competitive high school programs in the country while further developing his game under experienced coaching. Observers note that his combination of size, accuracy, and poise in the pocket could make him a key contributor as early as his first season with the Raiders. The announcement has already generated excitement among Aquinas fans, alumni, and local media, who anticipate that Merrell Jr. will have a major impact on Friday nights in South Florida.

The Raiders’ football program continues to attract top talent from across the region, and Merrell Jr.’s arrival is the latest example of the school’s ability to draw elite players looking to compete at a national level. His prior experience with Immaculata-La Salle, combined with his physical tools and efficiency as a passer, suggests he could quickly adapt to Aquinas’ offensive system and potentially take on a leadership role in the near future.
