Siemens Mobility will supply seven new Charger locomotives to modernize Tri-Rail service across South Florida

South Florida – The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) is taking a major step toward modernizing its commuter rail service with the addition of seven advanced Charger diesel-electric locomotives from Siemens Mobility. Expected to enter service in 2029, the new locomotives will enhance Tri-Rail’s operations along the 73.5-mile corridor linking Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, as well as the additional 8-mile stretch on the Florida East Coast Corridor to provide access to MiamiCentral.

Tri-Rail, which serves as South Florida’s regional commuter rail system, is replacing its aging fleet of six EMD GP49 locomotives with these state-of-the-art Chargers. The investment is part of a broader effort to strengthen reliability, modernize infrastructure, and provide passengers with a more efficient, safe, and comfortable commute.

The Siemens Charger locomotives offer modern features designed to improve the passenger experience while meeting stringent operational and regulatory requirements, including service into MiamiCentral. This access requires rail equipment capable of complying with specific operational standards, which the new Chargers are designed to meet. In addition, the locomotives are EPA Tier 4 compliant, making them the diesel-electric locomotives with the lowest emissions in North America, supporting Tri-Rail’s commitment to sustainability and cleaner transit.

Funded through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the procurement reflects Siemens Mobility’s ability to meet SFRTA’s technical and regulatory requirements. The locomotives will be built at Siemens’ Sacramento, California, rail manufacturing hub, which has been operational for 30 years and employs more than 2,500 workers. These units are Buy America compliant, reinforcing the federal requirement for domestic manufacturing in major transit procurements.

The addition of the new locomotives will allow Tri-Rail to retire its older GP49 units, which have served the system for decades. By doing so, SFRTA will provide commuters with a more reliable service, fewer delays, and modernized equipment that enhances both safety and performance. Riders can expect a smoother, quieter, and more energy-efficient experience while traveling throughout South Florida.

Production of the locomotives is scheduled to begin well in advance of delivery, with all units expected to enter service in 2029.
