Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responds to evening ocean rescue after swimmer reported in distress near shoreline
Pompano Beach, Florida – Emergency responders rushed to the shoreline in Pompano Beach on Sunday evening after reports of a swimmer in distress led to a rapid ocean rescue operation that ultimately ended in tragedy.
According to officials with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, the incident began at approximately 7:40 p.m. when a 911 call alerted emergency dispatchers to a possible drowning near 10 North Pompano Beach Boulevard. The call described a swimmer struggling in the ocean waters just offshore.
Ocean Rescue lifeguards were dispatched immediately and entered the water within moments of the alert. Working quickly under fading evening light, lifeguards searched the area and soon located an adult male floating unresponsive in the water. Authorities estimated the man to be approximately 50 years old.
Rescuers brought the victim back to shore as quickly as possible. Once on the beach, lifeguards began cardiopulmonary resuscitation while waiting for additional emergency crews to arrive.
Within minutes, paramedics from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue reached the scene and took over medical care. The responders initiated advanced life support procedures in an effort to revive the man. Emergency personnel continued aggressive resuscitation attempts as the patient was placed into an ambulance and transported to Broward Health North in nearby Deerfield Beach.
Despite the sustained emergency response and repeated lifesaving measures performed both at the beach and during transport, the victim could not be revived. Hospital staff later confirmed that the man was pronounced deceased after arrival.
Officials have not released the identity of the victim pending notification of family members.
Ocean rescue incidents, while relatively uncommon, remain one of the most serious emergencies faced by lifeguards and first responders along South Florida’s busy coastline. Rescue crews often respond within seconds when swimmers appear to be struggling, especially during evening hours when visibility becomes more challenging and beach attendance remains high.
Authorities did not immediately release details about the circumstances that led to the man becoming distressed in the water. It remains unclear whether strong currents, fatigue, or a medical issue may have played a role.
Officials from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue say incidents like this highlight the unpredictable nature of ocean conditions and the importance of beach safety awareness. Swimmers are often advised to remain near lifeguard-protected areas and avoid entering the water if they feel tired, unwell, or uncertain about conditions.
The investigation into the drowning remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather information about the events leading up to the emergency call.
