Sunrise crosswalk tragedy leaves woman dead after being struck on West Commercial Boulevard
Sunrise, Florida – A Saturday afternoon walk turned deadly on West Commercial Boulevard when a woman was struck and killed while crossing a busy roadway near Northwest 102nd Avenue, according to police. What began as an ordinary moment in a familiar neighborhood ended in a scene that drew emergency crews, investigators, and shaken witnesses.
Sunrise police said the crash happened as the woman attempted to cross the street on a section of West Commercial Boulevard known for steady, heavy traffic. A gray SUV struck her in the roadway, officials confirmed. The driver did not leave the scene and instead stayed nearby, speaking with responding officers as the situation unfolded.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and provided aid before transporting the woman to Broward Health Medical Center. Despite those efforts, she later died from her injuries at the hospital. Authorities have not yet released her name, pending notification of family members.
The crash immediately prompted a full investigation by Sunrise police, who spent hours documenting the area, examining roadway markings, and gathering initial statements. The driver involved remained cooperative at the scene, but officials have not said whether any citations or charges are being considered as the case continues to develop.

Local reporting noted that first responders worked urgently at the scene before the victim was rushed to the hospital, while investigators continued piecing together the sequence of events that led to the fatal impact. For now, many questions remain unanswered, including the exact timing of the crossing and visibility conditions at the moment of the collision.
This latest fatality adds another tragic chapter to Sunrise’s ongoing pedestrian safety concerns. Earlier this year, a deadly crash near the Sawgrass Mills shopping area left one person dead and two others injured after a vehicle struck three pedestrians, according to authorities. That case also drew a lengthy on-scene investigation and renewed attention on roadway safety in busy commercial zones.
Broader statewide data highlights just how persistent the problem has become. Florida continues to rank among the most dangerous states in the country for pedestrians. According to figures from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were more than 10,200 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2023 alone. Those incidents resulted in over 779 deaths and more than 1,400 serious injuries, underscoring a trend that safety officials have struggled to reverse.

State transportation experts have long pointed to multi-lane arterial roads like West Commercial Boulevard as especially hazardous. High speeds, multiple lanes of traffic, and frequent intersections create conditions where even a brief miscalculation can turn deadly.
As of now, Sunrise police say the investigation remains active. The driver has not been charged, and officials have not released further details about potential contributing factors such as speed, visibility, or right-of-way issues. Authorities are expected to continue reviewing evidence in the coming days as they work to fully understand what led to the fatal crash.
