Temporary adjustments to SE 17th Street Bridge hours aimed at reducing traffic congestion

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Starting June 2, 2025, a temporary change to the weekday schedule for the SE 17th Street Bridge in Fort Lauderdale will go into effect. The City of Fort Lauderdale, in collaboration with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the U.S. Coast Guard, is implementing this adjustment to help alleviate congestion during peak traffic hours.

This temporary modification, which will last through November 28, 2025, aims to ease road traffic during the busy morning and afternoon periods. Specifically, the bridge will not open on weekdays at the usual times of 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m. This change is expected to improve the flow of vehicles during these critical rush hours while minimizing the impact on marine traffic.

The U.S. Coast Guard will closely monitor the success of this deviation, using the period to evaluate whether a permanent schedule shift might be beneficial in the future. According to officials, the new timetable has been carefully designed to reduce vehicle delays without causing significant disruptions to marine access.

“Public vessels of the United States, tugs with tows, vessels in distress, those engaged in emergency or rescue operations, and vessels seeking shelter from severe weather will still be granted immediate access,” the announcement confirmed. These exceptions ensure that vital marine operations and safety procedures are not compromised by the changes.

While the alteration might cause some inconvenience for those commuting through the area, the overall goal is to strike a balance between the needs of drivers and those using the waterway.
