Governor DeSantis strengthens support for older Floridians through his Focus on Fiscal Responsibility budget plan

Tallahassee, Florida – Governor Ron DeSantis is placing Florida’s aging population at the forefront of his fiscal agenda, unveiling a proposed budget that dedicates significant resources to programs aimed at helping seniors live with dignity, independence, and better support. The plan, dubbed the Focus on Fiscal Responsibility budget, reflects a wide-reaching commitment to enhancing care while maintaining efficient use of public funds.

Department of Elder Affairs Secretary Michelle Branham praised the Governor’s ongoing efforts to serve older Floridians through targeted, thoughtful investment.

“The Governor’s steadfast dedication to Florida’s aging population has made our state a model for innovative and compassionate senior care,” said Secretary Michelle Branham. “Thanks to his bold leadership, we can continue expanding critical programs that enhance the lives of our seniors, support caregivers, and strengthen Florida’s aging network. His proposed investments demonstrate a deep understanding of the needs of our seniors and reflect a shared mission to ensure they age with dignity and independence while prioritizing government efficiency and streamlining service delivery.”

The budget proposes expanded funding across a range of key services that address the realities many seniors face, particularly those wishing to remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

One of the central elements of the proposal is a $6 million increase to Florida’s Alzheimer’s Disease Infrastructure, which supports both the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative (ADI) and the Florida Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence (FACE). This funding is intended to extend respite care for caregivers, expand outreach efforts, and improve the overall quality of life for families living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Governor is also requesting $7 million in additional funding for the Home Care for the Elderly (HCE) program. This initiative helps families keep their aging loved ones in their own homes by offering financial support to caregivers and avoiding the need for more expensive institutional care. The added funds will give more families access to the services and support they need to continue caring for seniors in a home setting.

In addition, $8 million has been proposed to strengthen the Community Care for the Elderly (CCE) program. The CCE program provides in-home services like meal delivery, personal hygiene assistance, and transportation. These are essential to helping older adults maintain their independence and stay engaged in their communities.

This proposed budget reflects a broader trend in Florida’s approach to senior care — one that emphasizes compassion, sustainability, and smart spending. Rather than relying solely on costly institutional models, the state is prioritizing preventative care and community-based services, which not only improve quality of life but also reduce strain on government resources.
