Sunrise, Florida ends addition of fluoride to drinking water in compliance with new state law

Sunrise, Florida – As of July 1st, fluoride has been removed from the potable water in Sunrise, Florida, following a new state law that has reshaped the approach to water treatment. This change comes in compliance with Florida Statutes (F.S.) 403.852 and F.S. 403.85, which were enacted after the State Legislature passed a bill banning the addition of water quality “additives” to drinking sources. As a result, Florida now joins Utah as one of only two states where fluoride is not added to public drinking water.

This significant shift in water policy will affect residents who have relied on the fluoridated water for its dental health benefits. Fluoride, commonly added to drinking water for its ability to prevent tooth decay, has been a long-standing practice in many communities across the United States. However, with its removal, the responsibility of ensuring adequate fluoride intake will now fall on individuals, particularly parents who may be concerned about their children’s dental health.

With fluoride no longer present in drinking water, it is recommended that residents consult with their dentist or pediatrician to discuss their specific fluoride needs. These professionals can provide guidance on alternative ways to ensure sufficient fluoride intake for strong, healthy teeth. Whether through fluoride supplements, toothpaste, or other sources, your dentist or pediatrician can help develop a plan to meet these needs, particularly for young children, who are especially vulnerable to cavities.

The move to remove fluoride from public water systems has sparked debate across the state, with some residents voicing concerns about potential long-term effects on oral health, while others support the decision as a step toward personal choice in health matters. As Florida transitions away from fluoridated water, it is clear that many will need to adjust their routines and seek advice from dental professionals to maintain optimal oral hygiene.

For residents of Sunrise and beyond, this change marks a new chapter in how fluoride is accessed, moving away from a community-based approach to one that relies more on individual decisions and professional advice.
