Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale named one of the top spots in the U.S. for a healthful stroll thanks to its scenic views and vibrant atmosphere

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Fort Lauderdale’s iconic East Las Olas Boulevard is renowned for its vibrant blend of luxury, culture, and stunning views — but it’s now gaining national recognition for another reason. Recently named one of the top three “most walkable and lovable main streets in America” by Assisted Living Magazine, Las Olas Boulevard is not only a prime spot for a leisurely walk but a destination that enhances your health with every step.

The survey, which polled over 3,000 Americans, aimed to pinpoint the best streets in the country for those looking to get in their recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day. The results highlighted streets that provide more than just a place to stroll, but an experience that combines natural beauty, social atmosphere, and wellness benefits.

East Las Olas Boulevard, which stretches from downtown Fort Lauderdale to the beach, earned its place at the top for several reasons. The boulevard is lined with shade trees, fountains, and tropical blooms, creating a picture-perfect environment that invites both locals and visitors to slow down and enjoy the journey. It’s the kind of space where you can take a peaceful walk in the morning light, feel the salt air from the nearby beach, and soak in the sights of local sculptures or grab a refreshing coconut water from a juice stand along the way.

According to the survey, Las Olas “feels more like a breeze than a street, lined with palms, flanked by fountains, and always touched by the scent of salt air and tropical blooms.” The sidewalks, smooth and shaded, are ideal for any type of walk, whether you’re strolling slowly or taking long, purposeful strides. “You might spot a local sculptor setting up a new piece or grab a cold coconut water from a juice stand. Morning light turns everything gold, and in the evening, the soft roar of the beach draws you east,” the survey continued.

But the benefits of walking go beyond the beauty and the atmosphere. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights, regular walking can improve mental health, sleep, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. And East Las Olas Boulevard offers the perfect setting to achieve those health benefits. The ambiance and variety of experiences along the street make the act of walking feel effortless, enjoyable, and even therapeutic.

“Too often, wellness gets boxed into gyms and gadgets,” said Jeremy Clerc, CEO of Assisted Living Magazine. “But the simple act of walking – especially in places that are beautiful, social, and full of charm – can be just as powerful. These main streets remind us that movement can be both joyful and effortless when the environment invites you in.”

Las Olas Boulevard was ranked just behind Lake Placid’s Main Street in New York, which came in at number one. The charming street runs alongside Mirror Lake, offering stunning views of the mountains and a tranquil environment perfect for a slow walk. The survey described it as a place where “wellness feels natural, like something the landscape itself has always encouraged.” But Las Olas doesn’t fall far behind, offering its own unique blend of relaxation, beauty, and access to great dining and cultural spots.

The full list of top streets features a variety of other locales, with State Street in Santa Barbara, California securing the second spot, and Front Street in Nome, Alaska taking the fourth. Gatlinburg, Tennessee, rounds out the top five with Downtown Parkway, a walkable stretch that offers mountain views and a peaceful atmosphere. Fort Lauderdale was one of only two cities in Florida to make the list, alongside Sarasota’s Main Street, which ranked at number 85. Sarasota’s street was celebrated for embodying “the vibrant fusion of art, culture, and coastal living,” with palm trees, cafes, and galleries creating a lively yet calming atmosphere.

East Las Olas Boulevard’s recognition comes at a time when more people are looking for ways to integrate health into their daily routines. The importance of walking, a simple yet highly effective form of exercise, has been emphasized by health experts for years. Walking not only improves physical health but also supports mental well-being, which is especially important in today’s fast-paced world. The streets named in the survey are those that offer more than just a path to walk on — they offer an experience, with picturesque surroundings, community engagement, and an atmosphere conducive to relaxation and reflection.

Additional insights from the survey reveal that more than half of the walkable streets listed are named Main Street, reinforcing the central role these thoroughfares play in fostering community interaction and promoting wellness. Furthermore, over half of the streets on the list are near water features, providing a calming backdrop that enhances the overall walking experience. Whether it’s the soothing sound of waves crashing or the peaceful reflection of trees in a lake, water adds a serene element that makes the act of walking even more enjoyable.

Alaska, perhaps surprisingly, made a significant mark on the list, with three of its streets — Nome, Skagway, and Homer — landing in the Top 50. These streets are more walkable per capita than any other state, showcasing how even colder, northern climates offer ideal conditions for healthy strolls.

The inclusion of Las Olas Boulevard on this prestigious list further solidifies Fort Lauderdale’s standing as a city that offers much more than just great beaches. It’s a place where locals and tourists alike can embrace a healthy lifestyle while enjoying the beauty and culture of one of the most vibrant areas in South Florida. Whether you’re walking for exercise, to clear your mind, or simply to enjoy the surroundings, East Las Olas Boulevard has earned its spot as one of the best streets in the country to take a health stroll.

As more people seek ways to improve their overall health, the streets listed in the survey stand as shining examples of how our environment plays a crucial role in supporting physical and mental wellness. With their charm, accessibility, and beauty, these streets are not only good for the body — they’re good for the soul.
