Florida Department of Transportation schedules nighttime lane closures on I-75 in Weston for major improvement project

Weston, Florida – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is set to implement nighttime lane closures on I-75 as part of the ongoing I-75 Interchange at Royal Palm Boulevard Improvements Project. Scheduled for Thursday, October 16, the closures are expected to impact traffic flow in the Weston area, with work running from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.. Drivers are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow detour routes during the overnight construction.

According to FDOT, all general purpose lanes of southbound I-75 (State Road 93) between just north of Royal Palm Boulevard and Griffin Road (State Road 818) will be fully closed to allow for overhead sign removal. While the managed lanes southbound will remain open, the ingress just south of Royal Palm Boulevard will be temporarily unavailable. Motorists looking to access the managed lanes are advised to use the next available ingress point, located just south of Griffin Road.

To help reduce congestion and maintain traffic safety, a detour has been established. Southbound motorists will be directed off the highway via the S.R. 93/I-75 southbound exit ramp to Royal Palm Boulevard westbound, then south on Weston Road, before re-entering I-75 southbound via S.R. 818/Griffin Road eastbound. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) will be on-site to assist drivers and ensure smooth traffic flow through the detour.

“The nighttime closures are necessary to safely remove overhead signage as part of our larger improvements on I-75,” said an FDOT spokesperson. “We encourage residents and commuters to plan their travel accordingly and follow all posted detour signs during construction hours.”

The I-75 Interchange at Royal Palm Boulevard Improvements Project is a $36.2 million initiative aimed at enhancing traffic capacity and safety along a critical stretch of I-75. The project includes widening the highway and its entrance and exit ramps, bridge widening, resurfacing, improved lighting, upgraded signage, and the installation of Wrong-Way Driver Detection Systems to prevent incidents. FDOT expects the work to be completed by summer 2028, providing long-term benefits for both local residents and regional commuters.

In addition to the overnight lane closures, drivers are reminded that southbound managed lane traffic will not be affected, allowing for continued use of express lanes. However, general purpose lanes will be unavailable, meaning travel times may increase during the closure window.

FDOT emphasizes the importance of safety during construction periods. Motorists should remain alert, adhere to detour directions, and watch for workers and equipment near the roadway. Those unfamiliar with the area or the detour route should consider leaving earlier or using alternate routes to avoid delays.

As FDOT continues its improvements along I-75, the agency stresses that temporary disruptions are part of a larger effort to enhance safety, traffic flow, and overall travel experience in the Weston area. By planning ahead and following detour guidance, commuters can minimize inconvenience while benefiting from the long-term improvements once the project is completed.

The October 16 nighttime lane closures represent the latest phase in a multi-year effort to modernize one of South Florida’s busiest highway corridors, reinforcing FDOT’s commitment to safer and more efficient travel for all motorists.
