Residents and motorists in Hollywood are warned to prepare for King Tides that could cause significant flooding in low-lying areas this season

Hollywood, Florida – Residents and motorists in Hollywood are being urged to prepare for unusually high tides, commonly referred to as King Tides, expected periodically through December. These seasonal high tides occur when the moon is at its closest point to Earth, causing water levels to rise higher than usual. Combined with rising sea levels and the region’s flat topography, King Tides increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and along the city’s seven miles of shoreline and 7.9 miles of canals.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), residents can anticipate above-average high tides on November 18 through 20, coinciding with the new moon, and again from December 2 through 7, during the full moon. During these periods, water levels could rise more than 2.5 feet above normal, making streets, parking lots, and coastal infrastructure more vulnerable to flooding.

Rainfall, wind strength, and wind direction can further amplify the height of these tides, meaning the actual water levels may fluctuate and sometimes exceed predictions. City officials are encouraging motorists to use caution and seek alternate routes whenever possible, especially in areas known to flood during high tides. “Motorists are urged to use caution and seek alternate routes to avoid traveling on flooded streets,” the city advises.

To mitigate the impact of King Tides, Hollywood has implemented a series of both short-term and long-term solutions. Flap gates have been installed throughout the stormwater system to prevent tidal waters from flowing back into streets and neighborhoods through storm drains. Additionally, auxiliary pumps are stationed in high-risk areas to quickly clear flooded streets and restore safe passage for residents and emergency vehicles.

King Tides are not just a local issue—they are part of a broader trend affecting coastal cities worldwide. Rising sea levels, combined with more frequent extreme weather events, mean that communities like Hollywood must remain vigilant during the winter months. City planners continue to assess vulnerabilities and implement infrastructure improvements to enhance resilience against tidal flooding.

For residents, the message is clear: awareness and preparation are essential. Parking near low-lying areas, docks, and canals should be avoided during the predicted high tide periods. Neighborhoods near the shoreline are advised to monitor local alerts and use caution when navigating streets prone to flooding. By taking these precautions, community members can minimize damage and ensure safety during the King Tide events expected over the coming weeks.

Hollywood officials continue to monitor tide predictions and will provide updates as conditions change. With coordinated efforts, improved infrastructure, and community vigilance, the city aims to reduce the impacts of seasonal flooding while keeping residents and visitors safe.
