Pembroke Pines hosts Water Safety Day 2026 to teach families how to make waves the safe way
Pembroke Pines, Florida – Families across South Florida will soon have the chance to mix fun with life-saving knowledge as the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation Department partners with local first responders to host a community event focused on one simple message — enjoying the water safely.
The annual Water Safety Day 2026, themed “Making Waves the Safe Way,” is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA Aquatic Center. The event is being organized through a collaboration between the city’s recreation, fire, and police departments, creating an opportunity for residents to interact directly with the professionals who help keep the community safe.
Officials say the event is designed for all ages and aims to combine entertainment with practical education about water safety. Guests will find the aquatic center transformed into a lively community gathering space with pool activities, music, local vendors, and family-friendly attractions.
A live DJ will provide music throughout the morning while children splash and play in the facility’s pool and water park area. Food options and giveaways will also be available, adding to the festival-like atmosphere organizers hope will draw families from across the city.
But beyond the games and music lies the event’s central goal: helping people understand how to stay safe around water.
Visitors will have the chance to meet firefighters, police officers, and other first responders who will demonstrate basic safety techniques and offer practical tips that could make a critical difference during an emergency.
One of the key learning opportunities during the event will be hands-on demonstrations of CPR and other lifesaving skills. Organizers hope the demonstrations will encourage more residents to become familiar with these techniques, which can be essential during water-related emergencies.
Participants will also receive free water safety-related giveaways, which may include educational materials and other items designed to reinforce safe swimming habits for children and adults alike.
The event is part of the countywide Water SMART initiative, a program that encourages communities to raise awareness about drowning prevention and safe water practices.
Pembroke Pines has long been an active participant in the initiative, working throughout the year to educate residents about water safety and promote responsible behavior around pools, lakes, and other waterways.
The city has even earned recognition as a Water Smart city, a designation that highlights its ongoing commitment to preventing drowning and reducing water-related accidents.
Local officials say programs like Water Safety Day play an important role in reaching families directly.
South Florida’s warm climate means pools, beaches, and water parks are a part of everyday life for many residents. While that lifestyle offers countless opportunities for recreation, it also makes safety education especially important.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children in the United States, which is why events like this focus on practical awareness and prevention.
Water Safety Day is scheduled just ahead of National Water Safety Month, observed every May. The nationwide awareness campaign highlights the importance of water safety education and encourages families to learn the skills needed to stay safe in and around water.
By hosting the event at the YMCA Aquatic Center, organizers hope to create a welcoming and accessible environment where learning feels natural rather than intimidating.
Children can explore the water park, families can relax by the pool, and residents can speak directly with the professionals who dedicate their careers to protecting the community.
City leaders say the event also serves another important purpose — strengthening the connection between residents and their local public safety teams.
When families meet firefighters, police officers, and recreation staff in a relaxed setting, it helps build trust and encourages ongoing conversations about safety.
Residents interested in attending can find additional information through the city’s website and community communication channels.
The city regularly shares updates about events and programs through digital newsletters, online publications, and social media platforms.
Residents can also stay informed by following the city’s media programming and online updates, which highlight upcoming activities and community initiatives.
For organizers, the message behind Water Safety Day remains simple and clear.
A day spent learning how to stay safe around water could help prevent accidents and save lives. And if the lessons come with music, games, and a few hours of family fun along the way, even better.
