Pembroke Pines, Florida – A wave of color, creativity, and community spirit is set to sweep across Pembroke Pines this year as the city prepares to mark a historic milestone with a series of artistic celebrations tied to America’s 250th anniversary. City officials announced an expansive lineup of free programs and activities, inviting residents of all ages to take part in what promises to be both a reflective and festive experience.

At the heart of the initiative is a simple idea—bring people together through art while honoring the themes that have shaped the nation’s history. From hands-on workshops to large-scale installations, the events are designed not only to entertain, but also to spark conversation about liberty, democracy, and equality.

One of the most ambitious projects in the lineup is a citywide tapestry that will quite literally be built by the community. Led by artist Magda Love, the effort invites residents to contribute fabric patches during scheduled sessions held at different locations throughout the city. These individual pieces, each carrying its own story or design, will eventually be stitched together into a single, unified work.

The tapestry project, known as commUNITYlab, emphasizes accessibility. Participants do not need prior artistic experience—just a willingness to contribute. Sessions are planned from late April through early June at venues including the Charles F. Dodge City Center, Studio 18 Art Complex, Southwest Regional Library, and the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Each gathering offers a chance for neighbors to meet, collaborate, and leave a lasting mark on a shared piece of art.

While the tapestry grows piece by piece, another major installation will take shape indoors. At the Charles F. Dodge City Center, visitors will encounter a vinyl mural designed by graphic artist Jill Weisberg. The mural draws on powerful national symbols, weaving together imagery such as the American flag, the Declaration of Independence, the bald eagle, and the Liberty Bell. Through these elements, the artwork reflects on the enduring ideas that continue to define the American experience.

Beyond large installations, the city’s Cultural Arts Division has also curated a range of smaller, interactive programs. At The Frank Art Gallery, visitors will find a self-guided activity running throughout the summer months. Open during regular gallery hours, the activity encourages participants to explore what community means to them through personal expression. The simplicity of the format allows for quiet reflection, offering a different pace compared to the more energetic group events.

Families, in particular, will find opportunities to engage with the celebrations in meaningful ways. Special Family Day events at The Frank Art Gallery will feature readings of beloved children’s books, paired with creative activities. On one occasion, visitors can enjoy a reading of “Thank You, Omu” by Oge Mora, followed by an art session. Another event will include “Be Kind” by Pat Zietlow Miller, accompanied by both an art activity and face painting. These gatherings blend storytelling with hands-on creativity, making the themes of kindness and community accessible to younger audiences.

Education also plays a key role in the overall program. The Upfront in The Pines exhibition series will rotate every two months, offering visitors a deeper look into the history behind the anniversary. Early exhibits will focus on the nation’s founding and the individuals who shaped it, while later installments will highlight the key documents that helped build the country. Through these displays, the city aims to connect artistic expression with historical understanding.

What makes this initiative stand out is its reach. Rather than being confined to a single venue, the celebrations are spread across multiple locations, ensuring that residents throughout Pembroke Pines can participate. Libraries, community centers, galleries, and public spaces all become part of the experience, reinforcing the idea that this is a citywide effort.

The emphasis on free access is another defining feature. By removing financial barriers, the city is encouraging broad participation, making it easier for families, students, and individuals from all backgrounds to get involved. In doing so, the program reflects the very values it seeks to celebrate—openness, inclusion, and shared opportunity.

As the months unfold, the various events will gradually build toward a larger sense of connection. A patch sewn at a local workshop, a drawing completed in a gallery, or a moment spent listening to a story—all become small threads in a much larger narrative. Together, they form a living tribute to both the past and the present.

For residents looking to stay informed, the city has made information readily available through multiple channels, including its website, digital newsletter, social media platforms, and local programming. Updates on schedules and additional activities are expected as the celebrations continue.

In Pembroke Pines, the America 250 anniversary is not being marked with a single event, but with a season of creativity. It is a reminder that history is not only something to be remembered—it is something that can be explored, questioned, and even reimagined through the shared language of art.
