Attorney General James Uthmeier announces arrests in a large organized fraud ring as Florida intensifies crackdown on repeat offenders

Tallahassee, Florida – A two-year investigation into a sprawling identity theft and burglary network has resulted in charges against six individuals, Attorney General James Uthmeier confirmed Wednesday. The case, which stretches across five Florida counties, involves hundreds of crimes targeting everyday residents, from gym-goers to senior citizens.

According to prosecutors, the group is linked to the so-called “Felony Lane Gang,” a theft ring based in Fort Lauderdale that has long been known for smash-and-grab burglaries at parking lots and public spaces. Investigators say the defendants carried out more than 200 break-ins between March 2021 and May 2023, stealing wallets, purses, checkbooks, credit cards, and identification documents. The stolen items were then used in a complex fraud operation involving forged checks and illegal bank withdrawals.

Authorities estimate the losses at more than $385,000, with at least 55 elderly victims among those affected. The investigation revealed that the defendants specifically targeted locations where people often left valuables in cars, such as gyms, parks, and recreational areas. From there, the stolen personal data was used to commit financial crimes that stretched far beyond the initial thefts.

Attorney General Uthmeier emphasized that the case highlights not just the danger of organized fraud, but also the risks posed by career criminals who cycle repeatedly through the justice system.

“The broader issue at hand here is that repeat offenders pose a major threat to the safety of our communities,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier. “Too often, these criminals are arrested, released, and given another chance to prey on innocent people. In Florida, we don’t just arrest criminals—we keep them behind bars where they belong.”

The six defendants now face multiple charges, including RICO, Conspiracy to Commit RICO, and Scheme to Defraud. Each offense carries a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years, as well as fines of up to $10,000. Prosecutors say they will seek the most severe penalties allowed by law in order to deter similar criminal enterprises.

Statewide Prosecutor Brad McVay underscored the determination of his office to pursue complex cases that disrupt communities across county lines.

“The Office of Statewide Prosecution will deploy every tool to dismantle criminal networks made up of career fraudsters and thieves that prey on hardworking Floridians,” said McVay. “The Office will pursue hefty and enhanced charges to ensure individuals convicted of operating as part of one of these organized crime rings are kept behind bars for a very long time, where they can no longer victimize Floridians.”

The investigation into the Felony Lane Gang underscores the challenges of stopping organized theft rings that move quickly across jurisdictions. Law enforcement officials note that the group’s tactics—breaking into vehicles, stealing IDs, and using impersonators to cash fraudulent checks—make them difficult to catch without coordinated statewide efforts.

For victims, the financial losses are only part of the story. Many who had their wallets or identification stolen also faced the stressful and time-consuming task of repairing damaged credit and protecting their accounts from further misuse. Authorities say the impact is particularly severe for older residents, who may struggle to navigate the complicated process of identity restoration.

Officials believe this case will send a clear message: organized fraud will be met with aggressive prosecution in Florida. Uthmeier’s office, which is tasked with handling multi-jurisdictional crime, has pledged to continue targeting groups that thrive on exploiting gaps between local enforcement agencies.

As the six defendants prepare to face trial, the case stands as one of the largest coordinated fraud crackdowns in recent years in Florida. The Attorney General’s office says it hopes the outcome will not only bring justice to the victims, but also deter others considering similar schemes.
