Broward County, Florida – Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is celebrating the achievements of five non-traditional schools that received “Commendable” School Improvement Ratings from the Florida Department of Education for the 2025/26 school year.

The recognition highlights the continued progress of alternative education programs and exceptional student education centers across the district. School Improvement Ratings are designed to measure student learning growth and recognize schools that meet state-established expectations in areas such as English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.

The five BCPS schools earning a “Commendable” rating include Dave Thomas Education Center, Seagull School, Whiddon Rodgers Education Center, Henry D. Perry Education Center and Bright Horizons.

Dave Thomas Education Center received the honor for the third consecutive year, continuing a strong record of academic improvement. Seagull School also maintained its success by earning a “Commendable” rating for the second year in a row.

Whiddon Rodgers Education Center reached a new milestone by receiving its first-ever “Commendable” rating. Meanwhile, Henry D. Perry Education Center and Bright Horizons improved from their previous ratings to achieve the higher recognition.

District officials said the results reflect the commitment of students, educators, administrators and families who work together to support learning and growth in non-traditional school settings.

“We’re proud of our students, teachers, administrators and families for demonstrating the dedication, focus and tenacity it takes to achieve outstanding results,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “Their efforts highlight the progress being made across the District and underscores our commitment to ensuring all students have access to high-quality educational opportunities and the support needed to thrive.”

Unlike traditional schools that receive standard school grades, alternative and exceptional student education centers may choose to receive School Improvement Ratings. These ratings focus on whether students demonstrate measurable learning gains during the school year.

The achievement is part of a larger period of academic success for Broward County Public Schools. The district recently received an “A” rating from the state for the third consecutive year, reflecting continued improvement across many schools and programs.

State results for the 2025/26 school year show that 129 district-operated schools earned an “A” grade, while 56 schools received a “B” grade and 27 schools earned a “C” grade. For the third straight year, BCPS reported having no schools receiving a “D” or “F” grade.

District leaders said the latest results demonstrate the impact of ongoing efforts to provide students with meaningful educational opportunities regardless of their learning environment. They noted that non-traditional schools play an important role by offering specialized support and alternative pathways designed to help students succeed.

The recognition of these five schools highlights the progress taking place throughout BCPS and the continued focus on improving academic outcomes for all students. Officials said the dedication shown by school communities remains a key factor in helping students overcome challenges and achieve their educational goals.
