The Town of Davie announces temporary return to free chlorine disinfection in its water system starting May 16

Davie, Florida – The Town of Davie Utilities Department has announced a scheduled change in its water treatment process that will take place from Friday, May 16 through Friday, June 13, 2025. During this time, the department will temporarily switch to a free chlorine disinfection method as part of routine maintenance for the town’s water system.

This planned transition is a standard procedure recommended by the Florida Department of Health and is commonly performed by water providers across the state. It’s designed to enhance the overall effectiveness of the town’s water treatment system and ensure the long-term safety and quality of the drinking water supply.

The adjustment will only affect customers who receive their water service directly from the Town of Davie. The impacted service area is shown in light blue on the town’s official map and includes residential, commercial, and municipal buildings that fall under the town-managed utility network.

Officials have emphasized that the water remains completely safe to drink and use during this period. “This routine procedure does not cause any adverse health effects and is safe for consumption,” the town confirmed in a public notice. However, residents may detect a temporary change in the water’s taste, smell, or appearance. This is a normal part of the transition and does not indicate a problem with water quality.

During the four-week maintenance window, residents may also notice fire hydrants in their neighborhoods being flushed. This is part of the regular process that accompanies free chlorine disinfection and helps clear the system to maintain overall cleanliness and pressure.

In preparation for the change, the Town of Davie has already notified key institutions such as hospitals, kidney dialysis centers, and nephrologists. These facilities may need to adjust certain equipment or treatment processes in order to accommodate the temporary shift in disinfection methods. Residents undergoing dialysis or similar treatments are encouraged to speak with their medical providers or dialysis technicians for personalized guidance.

Aquarium owners should also take note. Some fish and marine species are particularly sensitive to chlorine, and those with aquariums are advised to consult pet supply professionals regarding the proper use of dechlorination agents to protect aquatic life during this period.
