City of Pompano Beach and Broward Sheriff’s Office announce gun buyback event aimed at reducing gun violence and improving community safety across local neighborhoods in early June
Pompano Beach, Florida – The City of Pompano Beach and the Broward Sheriff’s Office are joining forces once again in an effort aimed at reducing gun violence and strengthening neighborhood safety through a community gun buyback event scheduled for early June.
The event is set for Saturday, June 6, running from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the E. Pat Larkins Community Center, located at 520 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Officials say the location was chosen for its accessibility and strong ties to the surrounding community, making it easier for residents to participate.
At the center of the initiative is a simple idea: give residents a safe, anonymous way to remove unwanted firearms from their homes. Community members will be able to turn in firearms without providing identification and without answering any questions. The process is designed to be completely confidential, helping reduce barriers that might otherwise prevent participation.
In exchange for surrendered firearms, participants may receive gift cards valued at up to $200, depending on the type of weapon turned in. Authorities hope this incentive will encourage more residents to take part and help reduce the number of unwanted guns in circulation.
The City and the Broward Sheriff’s Office emphasize that the goal is not enforcement, but prevention. By removing firearms that are no longer needed or wanted, officials believe the program can help reduce the risk of accidental harm, theft, or misuse.
Law enforcement leaders have long pointed to gun buyback programs as one of several tools that can support broader public safety strategies. While not a complete solution on its own, the initiative is seen as a practical step toward reducing the presence of firearms in homes and on the streets.
Community involvement is expected to play a key role in the event’s success. Organizers are encouraging residents to take advantage of the opportunity and help contribute to a safer environment for families, children, and neighborhoods across Pompano Beach.
As the event date approaches, city officials say they remain focused on raising awareness and ensuring residents know that participation is simple, voluntary, and anonymous. No registration is required, and the process is designed to move quickly and safely on site.
By the end of the day on June 6, organizers hope the effort will result in a meaningful number of firearms being removed from circulation, reinforcing ongoing efforts to promote safer communities throughout the region.
