Allie Long becomes first World Cup champion to play in Gainbridge Super League as Gordon scores for Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Fort Lauderdale United FC closed out its final Florida Derby matchup of the 2025/26 Gainbridge Super League season with another difficult result Saturday night, falling to Tampa Bay Sun FC in a match that still delivered a pair of memorable milestones for the home side.
The defeat pushed Fort Lauderdale to four consecutive losses, continuing a frustrating stretch late in the campaign. Yet despite the result, the evening carried historical significance thanks to the long-awaited debut of veteran midfielder Allie Long and another important contribution from team captain Sh’nia Gordon.
Long’s appearance marked a groundbreaking moment for the league itself. The former World Cup-winning midfielder became the first FIFA Women’s World Cup champion ever to appear in a Gainbridge Super League match, adding another chapter to a decorated professional career that has spanned both domestic and international soccer.
Meanwhile, Gordon continued to provide leadership and production for Fort Lauderdale, scoring her second goal of the season during the contest.
The match opened with Fort Lauderdale showing aggressive attacking intent from the very beginning. The home side pushed forward early, with players like Kiara Locklear and Kat González helping create pressure in the attacking third. For stretches, Fort Lauderdale appeared capable of controlling the pace and creating dangerous opportunities.
But momentum shifted during a decisive stretch in the middle portion of the match.
Tampa Bay capitalized on a period of sustained possession and offensive pressure, turning control of the game in its favor and forcing Fort Lauderdale into a difficult chase the rest of the evening. Despite moments of resistance and renewed energy late in the match, Fort Lauderdale could not fully recover.
Interim head coach Paul Jennison pointed to that stretch as the defining sequence of the contest.
“We started and finished the game brilliantly. Unfortunately, it was just a 15 minute period in there where they were really on top of us in terms of possession. They got a goal or two, and it’s a tough hill to climb then. When we’re on the front foot, we’re very good. Obviously the game swung and we weren’t able to get back into it. We’ve got two weeks left and we’ve got to keep performing, keep fighting, and the training environment will stay competitive.”
For Fort Lauderdale, the loss continued a difficult run in the standings. The club now sits at 5-13-8 with 23 points as the season approaches its conclusion. Tampa Bay improved slightly ahead with 24 points after securing the derby victory.
Still, much of the postgame attention centered on Long’s long-awaited return to competitive action.
The experienced midfielder had spent recent weeks training with the club while preparing for her first appearance. Her debut drew a strong response from supporters, many eager to witness one of the most accomplished players ever associated with the league.
After the match, Long spoke about both the anticipation leading into the game and her excitement about helping the team close the season on a stronger note.
“I’ve been here for a couple weeks and its just been a long time coming, kind of just anticipating the first game. Training has been great and just getting back into it and to get my first touches out of the way was awesome, and the crowd was great. I’m just really pumped for the next game. I think this team has the grit and determination to get it done, and we’re going to finish the season better than the last couple of games. I promise you that.”
Long’s arrival has brought additional visibility and experience to the club during the final weeks of the season. Even as results have proven difficult, Fort Lauderdale continues trying to build momentum and competitiveness heading into its closing fixtures.
The team now turns attention toward next weekend’s home finale, where players and coaches hope to end the season’s home schedule on a more positive note. After four straight defeats, the opportunity to return to the win column carries added importance for a group still searching for consistency.
For supporters, however, Saturday’s match represented more than just another result in the standings. It combined history, resilience, and the debut of one of women’s soccer’s most recognizable veterans — even if the final score ultimately favored Tampa Bay.
